Pernambuco state

Recife is the capital of the state of Pernambuco. The entire state is estimated to have a 8,8 million population which makes it the 7th largest state in Brazil. The state is also on the top 10 list of the states in Brazil that has the highest GDP.

History

Pernambuco was originally occupied by different indigenous groups and was first colonized by the Portuguese, like the rest of Brazil. But before the occupation of the Portuguese the French tried to maintain occupancy in the region. This was to no avail though as the Portuguese was the one who was able to gain control of the state.

In 1630, Pernambuco together with other Brazilian areas was occupied by the Dutch. This however was met with a huge resistance and soon the Portuguese was able to reclaim their colony.
